The agentic era

What changes when agents compose, edit and maintain content alongside people — and the guides that explain it.

Every few years the content management system gets reinvented, and every time the pitch sounds the same: this one finally separates content from the mess of building and shipping it. The agentic era is the third reinvention — and the difference is not the marketing, but what the system actually emits and who has to decide before anything goes live.

An agentic CMS is a content system built to be operated by AI agents end to end — composing, editing and migrating content under governance, with humans deciding what ships. An assistant drafting copy in a sidebar is an AI feature. An agentic CMS is different in kind: it lets an agent compose, edit, migrate and publish through the same permissions, validation and audit trail as a person.

The distinction is structural. In an agentic CMS the model works against validated data and governed actions, not raw code or markup, and every change carries its evidence with it. The system is built so an agent can be trusted to operate it, and so a person can review what it did.
