Project summary

In 2022, the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) undertook a major initiative to upgrade and enhance its public website. The existing platform suffered from poor user experience, limited authoring flexibility, and a growing misalignment with the NCSR brand.

User testing revealed that while the site contained high-quality information, it was difficult to navigate and poorly structured, creating barriers to accessing critical screening information. Content authors also found the platform cumbersome and time-consuming to update, impacting the organisation's ability to keep information current.

Noice was engaged to redesign the information architecture and user experience, create a new design system aligned to the NCSR brand, and deliver a modern, future-proof authoring experience using Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) 6.5. Following delivery, Noice continues to provide ongoing managed support for the platform.

About the client

The National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) is a single electronic record for each Australian participating in the bowel and cervical cancer screening programs.

The register supports these life-saving initiatives by inviting and reminding eligible participants to screen, and by creating a safety net that prompts participants and healthcare providers to take appropriate next steps throughout the screening journey.

Key stakeholders include the Australian Government Department of Health and Telstra Health.

Users were unclear how the NCSR, its website, and related portals provided practical value due to unclear homepage messaging.

The redesigned homepage supports clearer, more informative messaging. Hero content is followed by supporting content that peeks above the fold, encouraging exploration and engagement.

Challenge

Users struggled to locate key resources such as guides and videos. Navigation options disappeared on long pages, increasing frustration.

Solution

A persistent top navigation aligned to audience segments allows users to orient themselves anywhere on the site. Hub pages and side navigation provide multiple pathways to content.

Reduced cognitive load

Challenge

Healthcare professionals reported information overload, making content difficult to digest.

Solution

Content was grouped by topic and separated from hub pages, improving scannability and reducing cognitive burden. Duplicate content was consolidated to create clearer, more confident user journeys.
